Refractive Lens Exchange

Refractive lens exchange from the experienced eye doctors at Cascadia Eye is a form of refractive surgery in which the internal crystalline lens of the eye is removed and replaced with an artificial lens implant. It is a very similar procedure to a cataract surgery, but it is done specifically for refractive errors rather than to remove a cataract. Refractive lens exchange can be performed for both nearsightedness (myopia) and farsightedness (hyperopia).

RLE

Candidates

Refractive Lens Exchange is generally reserved for patients who wish to have refractive surgery, but who are not the best candidates for LASIK or PRK. The artificial lens implant differs from our natural internal crystalline lens in that it may not accommodate (change focus) at all or to the same degree as the natural crystalline lens. Thus, many patients enjoy good distance vision after a refractive lens exchange with little to no glasses prescription, but may still need reading glasses for near-distance work.

If you are interested in this type of refractive surgery, or if you have any questions about the procedure, please feel free to contact our office for more information.
