The front office staff consists of those who check patients in and out, phone staff, and medical records management. In today’s medical environment, this group has to be adaptable and constantly learning due to frequent changes and new requirements. We have a group of highly trained and experienced staff, with many of them having over 10 years with Cascadia Eye. In 2016, our front office staff chose to take their training up a level and study for the Ophthalmic Scribe certification, putting them on a level of knowledge equivalent to scribes who work with ophthalmologists in other practices.
Brett Nielson is the Patient Services Manager, with a background in training, management, and healthcare. He received his undergraduate degree in Public Relations, and has a Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration. Before he was hired at Cascadia Eye, he managed the Clinical Services Bureau at the Utah state prison. In his position, he especially enjoys being around people and building relationships. He and his family (wife and son) recently moved to Washington from Utah. They love the outdoors, and in their free time, they can be found hiking, fishing, or exploring.
Janet Knutson, OSC, CPSS
Janet Knutson first joined our practice in 1993. Two years later she left to stay with her children, but she came back in 2000 – and hasn’t left since. As one of our beloved long-term employees, she exemplifies dedication and a great love for her job. In 2016, she passed two tests to elevate her patient care further: the OSC (Ophthalmic Scribe) and the CPSS (Certified Patient Service Specialist), a nationally-recognized certification. She is our schedule manager and patient services specialist, and can be found most often in Mount Vernon. She loves listening to patients and making them comfortable, and finds her job very fulfilling! For fun she enjoys cooking, camping and motorcycling with the love of her life, with whom she lives in Sedro-Woolley. She also has two grown children, two grown stepchildren, and two dogs.
Marlene Hettinger, OSC
Marlene Hettinger has been a receptionist at Cascadia Eye since 2004. She is known to many as “The Queen” of the Sedro-Woolley Clinic. Luckily, her reign is benevolent! Marlene excels at making friends wherever she goes, including all the patients she helps every day. She is the primary patient services coordinator at Sedro Woolley, and wears many hats there, making sure things run smoothly for both patients and staff. In 2016 she passed her exam to be a certified ophthalmic scribe (OSC). Marlene has three adult children and lives in Sedro-Woolley.
Leslie Hernandez, OSC
Leslie Hernandez has been working as a receptionist since she was 17, starting as a volunteer at a medical clinic. She’s loved helping patients ever since! She first joined Cascadia Eye in early 2013, then left in 2017 to try a new adventure. But she came back again in 2018 because she really thinks of Cascadia Eye as part of her family! She checks in patients for the Mt. Vernon clinic and also provides Spanish interpretation, and her favorite part of the job is making someone’s day happier while interacting with patients one-on-one. Leslie grew up alternating her home between Mt. Vernon and Texas, and loves them both. She is married with two children, and also has a little Japanese Chin dog named Chanel.
Kristen Boggs, CMAA, OSC
Kristen Boggs joined us July of 2017 as a Location Coordinator, which means she assists patients over the phone and helps to keep our Mount Vernon office running smoothly. She comes to us well-qualified with a certification in Medical Administrative Assistance, and she received her ophthalmic scribe certification in October 2017. She loves working with the patients and interacting with them. Customer Service is her favorite thing – there is nothing more satisfying than knowing that she has helped someone! She and her husband celebrated 16 years of marriage in July. They moved to the Stanwood/Camano Island area from Edmonds in April 2017. They have two young adult daughters who live in Edmonds, and a teenage son who goes to school in Stanwood. The whole family loves to go camping, and Kristen loves to invite friends and family over for BBQ’s.
Alexandrea York, OSC
Alexandrea (Alex) York became our patient services coordinator for the Stanwood location in July 2017 and received her OSC certification in October 2017. She checks patients in and out of their appointments and gives them whatever assistance they need. Previously, Alex worked for seven years in customer service for an optical lab, and still loves both the customer service aspect — talking to patients and helping them — and everything to do with optical work. Originally from Poulsbo, WA, she now lives in Arlington with her husband and 5-year-old daughter. She loves spending time outside of work fishing and being on the water with her husband. Any excuse to be outside with her family! She also enjoys gardening and crocheting.
Lindsey Miller, OSC
Joining us in the summer of 2017, Lindsey Miller is our patient services coordinator for the Anacortes office, where she checks patients in and helps them with whatever they need. She passed her OSC certification in November 2017. Her favorite part of the job is being able to build stronger relationships with members of her Anacortes community. Originally from Delaware, Lindsey has been living in Anacortes for over 17 years with her husband and two beautiful children, Gabe and Ali. She loves Anacortes because her favorite place to be is on the water with her family, from swimming to beach BBQs to crabbing. The whole family also enjoys being active — Lindsey and her husband play softball and their children play soccer and baseball, and swim and dance. Lindsey also loves boxing, doing yoga with her daughter, running with her son, and teaching both to lead a healthy lifestyle. Fun fact: Lindsey is certified in Group Class Aerobics, Zumba, and Aqua Zumba!
Kelly Bolger joined Cascadia Eye in January 2018. She is the location coordinator for Stanwood and assists patients over the phone, among many other things. She comes to us with a background in the medical field, having previously been a Certified Nursing Assistant since 2008, at both an assisted-living facility and the orthopedic/neurosurgery floor of a medical center. She is also a certified medication technician. She has an AA degree from Skagit Valley College, and is pursuing a BA in Human Development, specializing in Geriatrics. She loves being able to take care of patients, from scheduling appointments to solving problems. Kelly moved to Mount Vernon from Florida to be closer to her husband’s family. She and her husband have an energetic yellow lab and love to hike with the dog on Little Mountain or by the Skagit River. She loves crocheting and arm-knitting huge fuzzy blankets. She and her husband also enjoy crafting wood furniture.
Chantel Gaviria joined our patient services staff in April 2018, and works in the Whidbey Island clinic in both front office and behind-the-scenes capacities, assisting patients and keeping the office running smoothly. She loves solving problems for patients and coworkers, especially finding feasible solutions to “impossible” problems. She started out in customer service in retail, working her way up to a management position, before deciding she wanted to do something more gratifying. So she went on to earn a Nursing Assistant Certification in May 2012 and work at a nursing home, then became a Certified Patient Care Technician and worked at both private clinics and a Cardio Thoracic ICU. She is currently also pursuing a BSN specializing in Wound Care. Chantel is from NYC originally and a die-hard Yankees fan. She says she married her favorite shortstop! The Navy brought her to Whidbey Island, and she is happiest by the beach, rain or shine. Her husband and daughter both play soccer and after cheering in college, she continues to cheer for them from the sidelines. She loves dancing–she has been dancing salsa and ballet since she was a child and the dance floor is her second-favorite place to be.
Savannah Hoyle started in July 2018 and is one of our Mount Vernon patient services coordinators, where she assists patients with checking out from there appointments and more. Her favorite part of patient care in Cascadia Eye is being able to interact with patients and make them comfortable in our clinic. She has previous experience as a Certified Nursing assistant for various kinds of geriatric care, as well as Mental health in-home care. This also led her to become a Medication Tech with special focus on Dementia and Diabetes. She is also certified in specialty Dementia care, as well as Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Acute Care Skills. Her other skills and certifications include: a patient registration certificate, an IP contract with Washington State to provide private care, and she is also working on her OSC certification. She loves her friends and family. She also loves Rottweilers, music, and poetry. Bonus fun fact: she also has training in the culinary arts!
